“The Infamous Dr. Jerome Glick” local history presentation

The Lewis and Clark County Historical Society (LCCHS) will present the “Infamous Dr. Jerome Glick” at the monthly lecture series at 7:00 PM, January 13, 2026 at the LCCHS History Center located in the downtown Steamboat Block, 618 Helena Avenue.
Dr. Glick, Montana’s first surgeon, is famous for his operation on Henry Plummer’s arm after he was shot by Hank Crawford in 1863. Dr. Glick, in a first-person interpretation by John Barrows of Helena, will talk of his past medical experiences and life in early day Bannack, Virginia City and Helena.
Utilizing audience members as “patients,” Dr. Glick will illustrate highlights of “gold rush” medicine including typical treatments, medical instruments and procedures of the time. Many of his stories will include notable persons of Montana’s early territorial days.
Mr. Barrows is an experienced and very entertaining reenactor, often portraying Dr. Glick in historical reenactments depicting the gold rush era in Montana.
