The 2nd U.S. Cavalry Association and Humanities Montana are proud to announce “A Celebration of the Montana Territory,” featuring Special Guest Presenter Dr. Lanny Real Bird on August 30th at the Lewis & Clark Fairgrounds in Helena. This year’s event is co-hosted by Humanities Montana, which brings distinguished cultural voices and educators to communities across the state..

The Association is honored to welcome Dr. Lanny Real Bird as the event’s featured presenter. Dr. Real Bird—an esteemed Apsáalooke (Crow) scholar, educator, linguist, and cultural historian—will deliver a public presentation on Indigenous history, language, and the complex cultural landscape of 19th-century Montana Territory on the 30th from 10AM to 4PM His work has been central to preserving and revitalizing the Crow language and oral tradition, and his appearance marks a significant addition to this year’s program, which includes:

• Living-history displays interpreting frontier military life
• Educational exhibits on settlement, trade, and territorial
development
• Cultural perspectives on the peoples who shaped
Montana’s early history
• Hands-on demonstrations for families, students, and
history enthusiasts
• Opportunities to meet, ask questions, and
learn about ongoing historical programs

The 2nd U.S. Cavalry Association remains committed to presenting historically grounded educational programming that reflects the diverse stories of Montana’s past. The partnership with Humanities Montana and Dr. Real Bird’s participation strengthen that mission and broaden the perspectives shared with the public.
