Free Winter Things to Do in Helena, MT
Are you looking for ways to keep the fun holiday spirit going without breaking the bank? Well, look no further! Helena has some amazing opportunities to stay busy, get out, and have fun all while staying within budget.
Some of you might be looking at the parks or the golf course and wishing there were fewer inches of snow, but don’t let that stop you from having fun! Even though you won’t be out there swinging a club, the golf course is still open for good times. In a partnership between the Last Chance Nordic Ski Cub and the Helena Parks and Recreation Department, the perimeter of Bill Roberts Golf Course has approximately four kilometers of groomed track for cross country skiing. Skiing is free and everyone is welcome! The city parks also offer a great opportunity for ice skating. Both Lincoln Park (1800 N. Roberts Street) and Cunningham Park ( 1234 Floweree St.) have free ice rinks. Keep in mind that these ice rinks are unattended and do not have staff or skate rentals. The Memorial Park Ice Skating Rink is a staffed outdoor ice rink. They do charge admission, but it is minimal, and skate rentals are free!
With it being cold outside, you might decide you want to stay inside and enjoy the warmth. Don’t worry, Helena also has some great free options for spending the day inside!
If you didn’t know, the Holter Museum of Art offers free admission on Fridays! They have some amazing exhibits and it’s a space that allows you to experience some great contemporary art. Another hidden gem in Helena is the Montana Wild Education Center. They have over 100 wildlife mounts on-site and a native fish aquarium. With free admission, this provides an opportunity for children and adults alike to learn about some of the unique wildlife we have here in Helena! Just a short drive from Montana Wild, there is the Montana Military Museum located in Fort Harrison. The museum is only open on Thursday but it is free to visit, although they always welcome donations. If you are planning on stopping by the museum, make sure to bring a photo ID with you.
These are just a few of the free activities that Helena has to offer. Many of the local breweries offer free events each week such as Trivia and Bingo Nights. Make sure to check out our events page!
